Veteran Iranian-American Professor Talks of US Police Brutality Against Him

Cambridge police placed the veteran professor inside a van and drove at full speed, then came to a full stop thus made him fly inside the all-metal compartment in the back of the van. His head smashed against a bar and was taken to a hospital.

July 02, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Renowned Iranian-American political science professor and analyst, Kaveh Afrasiabi, has accused the US police in Cambridge of extensive brutality against him during his unlawful arrest and custody in an interview with Iran’s Press TV on Thursday.

Afrasiabi said he was arrested on a flimsy ground that he had an outstanding traffic violation ticket some 25 years ago.  ‘The Cambridge police gave me a racist attitude, asked for my [drivers] license and arrested me on the spot on a flimsy basis that some 25 years ago I did not pay a driving violation fine -- which I have [paid],’ he said.

US police known for their gangster-type criminal behavior toward citizens often deploy physical force against their victims. There have been numerous incidents of US police brutalities on innocent civilians especially against the black and Latino communities.

According to Kaveh Afrasiabi, the Cambridge police placed him inside a van and drove at full speed, then came to a full stop thus made him fly inside the all-metal compartment in the back of the van. His head smashed against a bar and was taken to a hospital where he was diagnosed as having received a severe head concussion and subsequently treated.

The professor said while in custody, the police denied him the right to contact his family members or his lawyer. ‘I asked them (police) for the right to make a phone call so that I could have a family member or a lawyer to come. They denied that to me,’ Mr. Afrasiabi said. Apparently the police in Cambridge deny that Mr. Afrasiabi’s has ever been arrested by trying to wipeout the whole record despite the existence of an official police document given to him upon his release.

Afrasiabi has been a political science professor at Tehran University, Boston University and Bentley College. He was a former consultant to the UN program for Dialogue Amongst Civilizations and has participated in numerous interviews and talk shows on Press TV, CNN, MSNBC and Al-Jazeera.
