Iran Possesses S-300 System: Report Says

Iranian defense officials have called on Russia to fulfill the S-300 contract and if not Iran would manufacture a similar system domestically.

Tehran, August 04, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Iran’s semiofficial Fars News Agency reported that Iran has four complete units of Russian made S-300 surface-to-air missiles as part of its defense system.

According to the report Tehran receive two units from Belarus some years ago and two other units from an unspecified country. There has not been an official confirmation of this report by Iranian defense authorities so far.

The S-300 system, which according to leading military analysts is far more superior to American Patriot system, is an anti-aircraft and anti-missile system capable of shooting down several targets at 150 km distance and could reach altitudes of more than 27 km.

Iran and Russia signed a contract for the delivery of this system to Iran, but Moscow keeps prolonging the delivery for various reasons. Iranian defense officials have called on Russia to fulfill its contract and if not Iran would be capable of manufacturing a similar system domestically.

Meanwhile Russia’ own vast territory has been effectively surrounded by US-NATO missile systems over the past several years. Latest missile deployment in northeastern Poland near the enclave of Kaliningrad brings a large section of Russia under the offensive ranges of US and NATO missiles.

Russian Manufactured S-300 system is considered more superior to American made Patriot system for its reliability and accuracy
