World Rejects Symbolic Talks Between the PA and Israel

No one should allow Israel and the United States to gamble with the future of Palestine and undermine the integrity of its people: Iranian Official.

Tehran, August 29, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - A unified international community opposes resumption of talks between the Palestinian Authority and Israel aimed at buying a breathing room for Israel’s increasing international isolation.

Yesterday in Gaza several Palestinian factions joined to protest against direct negotiations. DFLP leader Salih Zeidan voiced strong opposition to the talks due on September 2 in Washington. He said, ‘Negotiations have no reference, nor an international framework, and they do not preserve the Palestinian people's rights.’ Zeidan then asked acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas to avoid yielding to US and Israeli pressure.

In Europe, the EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton also downplayed importance of another round of symbolic talks. She said, ‘For the EU as a whole, the focus is on a successful outcome of the talks (and not) on the choreography or who goes to Washington," the Jerusalem Post quoted Darren Ennis as saying. ‘The spotlight should be firmly focused on the talks themselves,’ as quoted by her spokesperson on Saturday. Ms. Ashton will instead travel to Beijing to meet Chinese leaders on Thursday at the time when the symbolic talks start in Washington.

According to Ashton only Tony Blair will attend the meeting while other leading diplomats including Russia’s Sergei Lavrov and the UN secretary General Ban Ki-moon would stay away from the negotiations.

Meanwhile in Tehran, Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larjani blasted US-initiated talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, saying it aims to legitimize its support for the Zionist regime, as reported by Fars News Agency. ‘If the United States seeks to create artificial hands of support for the Zionist regime through negotiations, they should know that the people of the region will cut those hands off,’ Larjiani said on Saturday.

The Speaker called on all Arab countries and the rest of the international community to support and act responsibly toward Palestinians. He said no one should allow Israel and the United States to gamble with the future of Palestine and undermine the integrity of its people.
