China to Hold Naval Drill in the Yellow Sea Ahead of US-South Korea

New naval exercise will be held off its coastal city of Qingdao at the time when North Korea’s Leader Kim Jung-il is visiting China.

August 30, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - China plans to hold a new round of live-ammunition exercise in the yellow sea after a similar drill held two weeks ago as a sign of its readiness to counter US-South Korean increasing naval presence in the area.

Chinese defense ministry issued a statement yesterday saying it would stage a naval drill this week starting Wednesday to Saturday in the Yellow Sea. ‘This is an annual routine training exercise, mainly involving the firing of shipboard artillery,’ the defense ministry said as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Both the US and South Korea have boosted their naval presence in the region under the pretext of countering North Korea following the sinking of a South Korean Vessel, Cheonan, last May. Latest Russian, Chinese and other international investigation teams have concluded that most likely a rising sea mine explosion - perhaps fired by US Navy - caused the Cheonan incident, a charge United States denies.

Analysts believe US naval show offs are not meant to scare powerful rivals such as North Korea or China in a military way. They believe the US simply wants to tell a host of other smaller nations around the world that it still possesses a large military force thus help inflate its image as some kind of international police officer. At the same time US military postures temporarily help maintain the dollar status as the global exchange currency.

According to Chinese defense ministry new naval exercise will be held off the coastal city of Qingdao when North Korea’s Leader Kim Jung-il is visiting China.

Relation between Washington and Beijing is much more complex than what is publicly expressed. The US considers China a main rival against Western industrial hegemony long-held following the end of WWII. The ongoing industrial and technological developments in China would lead to similar developments in other parts of Asia as in a chain reaction. This should effectively prevent Western industrial powers including the US, UK, France etc. from further industrialization and a historic switch into the world of services. It’s no wonder even right now the main industry in US is the speculative financial services hardly enough to improve industrial productivity like it achieved after WWII.

Analysts believe US and its dwindling number of allies have only one option left to harness China- Asia and that is though cutting off the latter's direct access to oil and gas at the source. In a grand strategy, the US and NATO have been able to militarily surround Russia, China and other regions aimed at controlling future energy flows. It explains the ongoing wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and increasing naval presences around the world including in the Yellow Sea, Persian Gulf, Arctic, Suez Canal, and Caribbean.
