EU Condemns France's ill Treatment of Roma

Nicholas Sarkozy got sucked into verbal exchange with Jose Manuel Barroso, the European Commission chief, over France’s treatment of its minorities: EU Official.

September 17, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - In the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis gripping the European Union members - due to peak oil - EU justice commissioner Viviane Reding grilled French officials for their racist behavior toward the ancient Roma people.

Once again Europe is stepping into racial profiling after what took place during the Second World War. Last August, the right-wing administration of Nicholas Sarkozy, gave green light to expel another group of 1000 Roma people from France as a clear sign of racial hatred and discrimination.

Despite Napoleon Bonaparte losing the battle at Waterloo against the British in 1815,  France, which has always prided itself for being the epitome of true European civilization, far more advanced than that of their historic enemy across the channel, began targeting minority groups since past several years. On Thursday, the EU justice commissioner, Viviane Reding said France’s reaction to deport Roma minority group was contrary to EU’s human rights regulations and that she would report France to the European Court for breach of EU rules on this matter.

According to Bulgarian prime minister Boyko Borisov, who attended the court meeting in Brussels, Nicholas Sarkozy got sucked into verbal exchange with Jose Manuel Barroso, the European Commission chief, over France’s treatment of its minorities. ‘Yes, there was a clash, Barroso vigorously defended the role of the EC, which polices the application of EU-wide laws governing freedom of movement for all citizens,’ said another EU official present at the meeting.

Historically speaking, during times of economic hardship, there occur numerous instances of racial discrimination in Europe. Prior to the WWII, the former Nazi regime of Germany began systematic racial profiling of what it described as the more pure Aryan race in contrast to other ethnic minorities. The Hitler’s regime - categorizing people - embarked on systematic deportation and an eventual extermination of various groups including the Roma people.

A similar phenomenon is now taking place in France under the right-wing administration of Nicholas Sarkozy who has clearly failed to bring economic prosperity, boost employment, eradicate poverty or rejuvenate arts and culture. Other international bodies including the UN and the Vatican have criticized the expulsions. More than 8,000 Roma have been deported from France since the beginning of the year following 9,875 who were expelled in 2009.
